Most of what we write about is changing: Martyn’s Law is law but not yet in force, Making Tax Digital reaches more landlords each April, and the tipping rules gained a new duty that is still waiting for a start date. This page gathers the current position in one place so you do not have to open every guide.
It is assembled automatically from the status box at the top of each guide, so it cannot disagree with them. Each entry has its own “last checked” date. We re-check every official source at least every 90 days, and sooner when a source changes (how we write and check our guides).
To hear about changes, subscribe to the updates feed in any feed reader. It lists new guides and each dated change we make to an existing guide, and nothing else. We do not run an email list.
This is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice. Follow the links to the official sources in each guide.
Martyn’s Law
Status at 22 October 2026: not yet in force
Martyn’s Law is the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025. It received Royal Assent on 3 April 2025, but its duties on premises are not in force. The Home Office says there is a minimum implementation period of 24 months, so the earliest start is April 2027. No start date has been appointed, and the Security Industry Authority’s (SIA) own guidance is not final. Nothing below is a legal requirement today.

Making Tax Digital
Status at 22 October 2026
Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax began on 6 April 2026 for people whose qualifying income was over £50,000. The next stage starts on 6 April 2027 for those over £30,000, and a third on 6 April 2028 for those over £20,000. GOV.UK states these dates and the Income Tax (Digital Obligations) Regulations 2026 set the thresholds. Partnerships are not included yet and have no date.

Status at 22 October 2026: the 2024 law is in force; one extra duty is not
The Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 and its statutory Code of Practice have applied since 1 October 2024. A further duty, to consult your workers when you write or review your tipping policy, was added by section 14 of the Employment Rights Act 2025 but is not yet in force. The government withdrew a revised Code in July 2026 and ran a new consultation from 19 August to 29 September 2026. GOV.UK says employers should keep following the existing Code for now, and has not given a start date.
